The only thing I hear more than local music these days is talk about local music. I was going from one show to another last Saturday, and stopped by the Plaid Pantry on Morrison. Picture, behind the counter, a young, rail-thin and pre-treatment James Hetfield talking to and older, heavier version of Data from Goonies. Metallica was telling Goonies, "In the music industry, it's not about what you know, it's about who you know. And I know all the right people right now. All I need is a bassist and rhythm guitar player." It's probably tough to meet other musicians when you're working graveyards.
So if you're one of those unfortunates with a full band but without any of the "who's", we've compiled some of the "whats" for this month's issue. Maybe it's not going to get you major distribution, but it's interesting reading, none-the-less.
For example, Tiffany Lee Brown, editor of 2 Gyrlz Quarterly, tells us about keeping Portland a vibrant music campground. The guys from Lifesavas talk about the whats of their sucess. Patrick Kearns covers what it is that makes his recordings sound big and full, without a big and full bank account. And there are a few other gems in there, like Sound Advice and the Holocene review.
So there you go. It may not pay your bills, and it probably isn't going to buy your next 6-pack from the corner store, but we enjoyed putting it together, and we hope you enjoy reading it. Here you go, the 5th issue.
