PDX POP Now! Now, I Said!

Started in 1998, the Portland Indiepop Mailing list (aka, PDX Pop) has been gathering no dust. As the years have gone by, many musicians and fans have joined the list to read, rant and rave about what they like, or don’t, about Portland music. This year they are putting together a 3 day, all-ages, free musical event. Some 50 bands are said to be playing this innovative show. Innovative because the entire event is being put together by a board of volunteers who have come together with and through the mailing list. Innovative because the bands were democratically picked by the list members. Innovative because the Meow Meow has given its square footage over for the entire 3 days. If you would like to be a part of the mailing list, it’s open to everyone.

Not Your Hipster’s Karaoke

You’ve been to Chopstick’s Express and the Galaxy. There both great places to get your rockstar on. But, c’mon, sometimes you don’t want to take singing other people’s songs that seriously. How many times do you have to sit through some zealous choir girl singing True Colors, like they really, really mean it. Luckily there are many other places to go and drink mightily and not wait around for an hour and a half to do your Merle Haggard rendition of Genie in a Bottle. Delilah’a Circus of the Stars on Sunday’s at the Etc.Tavern (3276 NE Killingsworth) is a great place to go after the Simpsons are over and you’re in the mood for DiGiorno Pizza. The Candle Light Restaurant’s (7335 NE Glisan) Danny Chavez hosts a Friday and Saturday Karoake at which he will, if in the right key, blow his saxophone for you. It’s better than singing into a brush in your bedroom.

Portland’s 1930s Paris

Here in portland there are evenings when Gypsy Jazz players and listeners can gather and spend a few hours reliving the spirit of Django Rienhardt. If you have heard the Kung Pao Chickens, Gypsy Cab or Django’s Tigers at all, then you know what I mean. Now, twice a week, there are two different places you can come and just enjoy, or, for those more adventerous types, bring your instrument and partake in the fun. Monday nights at the Star E. Rose (2403 NE Alberta) from 7:00 to 9:00 is a relaxed, all ages coffee shop that sports homemade desserts and deli food. Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Moon and Sixpence (2014 NE 42nd Ave), you can go sip one of their many English style beers and nibble on their many English style nibblets. They also have cork dartboards. Please no throwing the darts at the musicians.
